My husband and I, both teachers, are looking into the possibility of a sabbatical next year. We are thinking we'd like to spend February and March travelling in Europe, but mostly Italy (with a foray to Croatia). We are looking at apartments for rent by VRBO, however, as our sabbatical would be unpaid, we are considering other housing situations such as agritourismo. Has anyone out there ever done this, and what has been your experience? We are middle aged, still active, but probably can't sling bales of hay for any extended time!

We've stayed at one in Sicily and it was great, but no way did our host want us turistas anywhere near the actual workings of the farm. His wife didn't even want us in the kitchen!
If you're thinking you'll be REQUIRED to work at an agriturismo, my guess is NO WAY.
We were considering the sort of stay where you do participate in the running of the farm for a few hours a day in exchange for a room and meals. Some places even offer to help you learn Italian and/or learn Italian cooking! The WWOOF Italia website has opportunities for this kind of agritourismo.
Cool. Never heard of WWOOF before. Looks interesting. Have fun!
