Long weekend in Bari, Puglia without car

We are two friends (women in their 30s)flying to Bari for friday-monday weekend getaway in June. Since I heard Bari is not so worth visiting, I am wondering where we should accomodate ourselves? We will have to take the train/bus. We will do a very laid back travelling, one day at a beach and maybe one day trip to Locorotundo, Matera or Alberobello. The rest just wondering around the city, enjoying sun and food. Any tips would help!

I actually like Bari--the old town is atmospheric and pleasant (it has an out of date reputation), but you might prefer Monopoli.

Visit St. Nicholas Cathedral, which has the relics of St. Nicholas (aka Santa Claus).
