Long-term rental of car in Italy, EU-citizen (Swedish)

Ciao guys!

Hopeful someone here could help me. I'm a EU citizen (Swedish) and right now staying in Napoli for two months. For our vacation (full month of August), me and my girlfriend are planning to explore Italy by car. We did not bring a car with us, so we're going to have to rent/lease one - as we do not have residency status in Italy however, it is my understanding that we cannot lease one.

What options do you reckon we have here? Sure we could rent the whole month through Sixt or something, but to pay ~1500€ for a month for a smashed up Panda (which is more than likely >50% of it's market value, haha) isn't extremely appealing - if we have other options anyway :)

Helpful for any pointers!

If you are older than 25 and have had EU driving licence for a while you should be able to get a reasonable deal for a 1 month rental. Over the years we have had budget rentals through small local companies and also the big names and all the cars have been new/ almost new. The only old car we had was from EasyRent (or whatever the EasyJet car hire arm is called) for a month touring Ireland. It was pretty beat up 5-year old Toyota Corolla but was less than €20 per day.

Do you have a US credit card? If so, check your small print as the good ones include free car hire insurance extras which can save tons. If you are a US resident, you may be able to get better deals from US websites.

So for the best deal you have to do your homework and why not make enquiries locally in person since you are now in Napoli?

Thanks for your response Mark.

I'm 29, however I've only had my driving license for a bit over two years. I do not have a US credit card sadly, I'm a Swedish citizen living in Italy for the moment being. But good point about trying out local dealerships, will try to do that :) Thanks.

We discovered that France is a much better source for long term rentals - you can “lease” a brand new car for 30 days or longer, and the price includes insurance! We flew into Nice, picked up our car and drove into Italy, then returned the car before flying home. No hassles and super easy.
