Long-term closure of A-19 segment in Sicilia

Please, all travelers to Sicilia island and driving, take note that a segment of A19 highway (connecting Palermo to Catania and often on the itinerary of many people doing a road trip there) has been closed due to a major landslide between exists Tremonzelli and Scilato, and will likely remain closed for 2 or 3 years. Add 40 minutes up to 1h extra travel time on your plans as a detour takes traffic through small local roads that are very likely to be congested during summer and holidays.

Andre,

Thanks for posting that. I've seen a few stories on that on the Italian news over the last few days, and the damage looks severe. The forces required to move that heavy elevated concrete roadway must have been enormous!

Thanks, Andre. This seems likely to affect bus travel as well, doesn't it?

It affects bus travel much more than cars, since buses cannot use the shortest shortcuts through small villages.

This is a slow-moving landslide, millions of tons of rock and earth are detaching from a slope, so they will rebuild that highway sector entirely, maybe using suspension bridge design to go over the affected area.
