long layover in Brussels

My party of 5 have a 16 hour layover in Brussels, arriving @ 7pm. Any suggestions? Any good tips on what to see/eat while in Brussels? This would be the first week in October.

Eat everything! The chocolate is superb - the best anywhere- the french fries (don't laugh) are a national dish with good reason, and the beer is better than in Germany. The pastries are wonderful too.

16 hours is not enough time to get to Italy and enjoy it. You might want to delete this posting from the Italy section of the board, and put it in the To the West section. :) Good luck.

We are doing a tour in Italy and this was a layover on the leg home. As soon as I submitted it, it occurred to me that it really wasn't Italy related.

Chez Leon in Restaurant Row...touristy but get some good mussels and fries. I would definitely check out the Delirium Café right down the street from Chez Leon. Over 2000 beers! They were playing some old school rock music the night I was there. I ate breakfast at the Grand Place, that was a nice view with my eggs and coffee. Metro stops running at midnight I believe except for some special Noctis trains "Every weekend the NOCTIS lines cross the Brussels-Capital Region until 3 a.m. Every Friday and Saturday night, from 0.15 a.m. until 3 a.m., a night network brings you home safely" http://www.stib.be/noctis.html?l=en maybe look at a cheap hotel crash pad to store your stuff, wash up, etc...you'll end up heading to the airport fairly early.

Your biggest problem is that your layover timing is such that you will be there during the night. If you arrive at 7:00 p.m. you will be able to go have dinner and maybe some drinks. What day of the week will it be? Possibly everything but restaurants and bars will be closed by the time you could make it into town. If you have 16 hours, that means your next flight leaves at 11:00 a.m. You will need to make your way back to the airport and arrive a couple of hours before your flight. I don't know how far the airport is or how long it takes to get there, but assume you need to allow 3 hours for all that. You really won't have the ability to see anything then either. We're you planning to get a hotel room? What will you do with your luggage?
