In London you need reservations, basically any time of the year. And brace yourself for the prices.

You might also try a place outside of London, like Croydon. We have a friend there, and stayed in Croydon last time we were in London; while it was a 10-15-minute train ride away, we got a lot more room for the money.

Nancy,

You might want to re-post this in the "To The North" section, as you'll likely get better responses.

To answer your question, I'd highly recommend getting reservations in London or you'll probably end up paying a very HIGH price for accomodations. Trying to find a place with vacancies was one of the most challenging parts of the planning for my trip last fall.

Happy travels!

If you have difficulty finding something affordable, try using priceline.com. You won't know exactly what hotel or B&B you will be staying at but you can choose the part of the city you want stay and the number of stars the place is rated. We did this for Paris last summer and saved big. Plus, you are paying in US $ before you go so there is no exchange fee. All you do is show up with your reservation confirmation. Good luck.
