London city tour during a long layover at Heathrow?

Is it feasible to take a tour of the city during a 6 hour layover at London Heathrow? I know the airport is about 25 miles out of the city and don't know the traffic particulars. Additionally we'll need time to check-in again.

If you take the Heathrow Express, https://www.heathrowexpress.com
you will be at Paddington Station in 15 minutes. You could do a hop-on hop-off bus and see everything but it might be a better use of your time to pick one spot to explore. On our trip the only hold up was the line to buy the one day pass for the tube. I should have done more research about prepurchasing tickets or using the kiosks.

And allow enough time to get to your flight. Do you need to check-in? If so, you may not have time to go into the city. Often airlines close the check-in for flights - verify with you carrier. If you have your boarding passes before you leave the airport, then you need to allow time just for passport control and security.

Sal, did you realize you posted this in the Italy section of the board? You might get more responses if you post it in the "To the North" section which includes England.

To leave the airport, you must go through Immigration/Passport Control. Depending how many other flights are arriving at the same time, this can take a long time for a non-EU citizen. We were in line for more than an hour when we did that last May. Add to that the time to get to the Heathrow Express ( if you have to transfer terminals) and the travelmtime itself, and you won' t have much time to see London and return with enough time to check in and go through security. It does nor seem to be worth the cost of a Heathrow Express ticket.

Sal, I've read that a lot of people recommend going to WIndsor Castle, I think it's Heathrow that it's near.
