Logistics of Rick Steves Tour of Lucca on Best of Tuscany

We're taking the Best of Tuscany tour which ends in Lucca. In the morning is a walking tour and then the afternoon is free. That evening is the farewell dinner. Our daughter would really like to visit the Leaning Tour of Pisa, which is only about 25 minute train from Lucca. We're planning on doing it during the free afternoon.

Does anyone have any experience with when the walking tour of Lucca ends and when the farewell dinner starts? Do we have time to make it to Pisa and back? (Google says that its only about 18 minute walk from S. Rosorre station to the Plaza.)

Thanks in advance!

I haven't taken this specific tour but I have been on lots of other Rick Steves tours. Based on my past experiences, the walking tour should end around lunchtime. If the walking tour was to take a break for lunch on your own and continue with the group immediately, the itinerary would mention it. The timing of the farewell dinner can vary. While dinner in Italy is late, the tour group dinners usually will start around 7 or 7:30 in the evening. However, the farewell dinner can be a long affair. Some guides choose to start the last dinner bit earlier so that it can end earlier. Some tour participants may have very early flights the next morning so the tour guide may take this into consideration.

You should be fine, although not a long visit in Pisa. There's lots of options for the train, looks like every 30 minutes. You could get a cab from the train station if you feel short on time. You can visit the Leaning Tower, it's a timed ticket, every 15 minutes. It is 20 Euro a person to go into the Tower. Make your best estimate on the time, looks like you can only book a few weeks in advance, so maybe buy them on the tour after talking to the tour guide. You may be able to buy the day of as well. We went in 2010, the Tower was under construction, so we didn't have a chance to go inside. We took the train from Lucca first thing in the morning, walked to the plaza, stopped for coffee, then up to Cinque Terre for the day. Glad we did it. Have a great trip.
