Logistics of leaving FCO (Rome Airport) and travelling with a toddler

My husband, 18 month old daughter, 70 year old dad and I will be arriving mid-day (assuming our flight is on time) to Rome from Calgary. Our accommodations in Rome are with a cousin who won't have a carseat for our toddler (we also don't plan on bringing one since most of our travel throughout Italy will be on trains) so we plan on hiring a transport service to take us from the airport to her place, since it would take over 2 hours to get there via public transport, according to Google. So my question is: how much time should we give ourselves (with checked baggage most likely) to get off the plane and out of security etc...? I want to give Welcome Pick-ups (the service we're thinking of hiring) an estimate on when to expect us? All assuming our flights are on time of course...

Travelling post-pandemic, internationally and now with a toddler (goodbye easy one carry-on bag kinda travel!) is um... different.
Thanks!

Check with the services you are looking at. Many only require you provide your flight information and scheduled arrival time. They monitor and will be there when you arrive. Otherwise, I think it is safe to say an hour would work, barring any delays.

Give them the flight information, then they know what to do.
Time from landing to arrival depends on various factors:
- Where is the flight arriving from (directly from Canada or from another European Schengen getaway)?
- Number of international flights arriving simultaneously
- Baggage claim time (that can vary)
Generally one hour from touchdown to baggage pick up should be enough, but sometimes, if multiple arrivals at the same time (and the flight is from outside Schengen area), there may be long lines at passport control (immigration).

Thanks Paul!
I'll take a closer look. But good to hear you think it will be roughly an hour! Our domestic flight this past summer had us waiting 1.5hours for our bags (serious job cuts at YVR was the issue) so I'm a little shook up from that experience and my head just "goes there" thinking about how bonkers it will be for international flight arrivals... haha

Who knows -- the majority of the time we have sailed through in the hour/90 minutes time period but one Saturday morning it took over 3 hours to clear immigration. But I would think that a max of two hour allowance should work.

Welcome Pickups will ask for your flight number on their reservation form. They will then check the flight arrival time on the day of your arrival and be waiting for you as you exit the secure area. They will wait until you arrive even if it takes longer than anticipated.

The service that you are considering indicates on their web site that they monitor flight data and will be there whether you arrive early or whether you are delayed up to 8 hours. This is excellent. Under their terms of service they indicate a 60 minute complimentary airport wait time beyond the scheduled pickup time which is adjusted according to your requests and how it relates to your flight’s scheduled vs delayed arrival time as well as what if any additional charges might come into play. You may have already read sections 3.4 and 3.5 which may help in determining what you require of them.

You are correct in wanting to give them your estimated pickup because the complimentary wait time appears to begin after the pickup time that you request of them.

If your accommodation is 2 hours away from FCO via Public Transit, you are staying out of the city center and far from any metro station/tram stop.

This means that you'll be commuting to central Rome every day, twice a day, using Rome's overcrowded buses.

With an 18 months old? Good luck.
