Logistics challenge: Help with Rome-Pompeii-Positano Day

We will be traveling from Rome to stay in Positano. I am traveling with two school age children and my 70 year old mother. We will have luggage with us.

I would like to stop along the way for a tour in Pompeii. I feel like we could navigate taking the train to Pompeii but want to get advice on the best solution if there is a tour and transportation option to Positano.

I have seen tours that are round trip from either Rome or Positano but less that start in one town and end in another, or that would start in Pompeii. Any recommendations or leads?

You have a truly ambitious/busy day planned. Presumably this will be in summer when temps in high 80s to mid 90s would not be uncommon.

I would not try to cram a stop at Pompeii in between transiting Rome to Positano.

Others may have suggestions on the least ugly way to accomplish what you propose.

Is this air-arrival day in Rome? Are you staying in a real hotel in Positano? Already booked? How many vertical steps to reach the hotel from the road? 10? 100? 300? Budget? Next destination after Positano? Month of year?
