Lodging Suggestions for Florence, Rome, and Sorrento

I am interested in feedback on accommodations in Florence, Rome and Sorrento. Proximity to main tourist sites, safety and reasonable pricing are key criteria. (We will be riding on the train and bus.)

Thanks,

All three places you mention are safe. As long as you use normal precautions you will be fine.

You don't say what you consider "reasonable pricing" to be. A specific amount per night will get you specific suggestions. Also, which sites do you want to see? All three areas have many many sites worth visiting and lots of great areas to stay in. If you are more specific you'll get more specific answers that can save you a lot of time.

For me, "reasonable" means "budget" to some people: about 120euro per night single in Rome, less in Florence and Sorrento. Is this what you are thinking?

You also might want to add QUIET to your list of desirable qualities, if that is important to you. Or if you expect a nice breakfast if one is included. I stayed at a very cheap place in Sorrento last October in an excellent location near the trains and busses, but it was very noisy until 2 am, and the espresso machine was somewhat scary! The cheap place I stayed in Florence near the train station had a shower and sink in the room but the toilet was far down the hall near the reception desk, and no breakfast included. At least the room was quiet.

You probably already know, but I'll reiterate, that Rick's recommendations, which we revisit nearly every year, are in his Italy guidebook. Any place listed in Rick's book should be clean, safe, and conveniently located, but if he uses descriptors like "dingy" or "musty" or "noisy," then you must take those into account. I have always found the listings to be reliable, but they use an economy of language that makes every word count. He will often indicate if you can/should request a "quieter" room, away from the street. In general, you should always expect street noise, for instance from late-night revelers talking too loudly and from early morning garbage trucks dumping dumpsters. In summer, air conditioning is worthwhile to allow you to sleep with the windows closed.

HI Suzzana

I always recommend Hotel Sorrento City -close to bus and train, on main drag and very nice people. If you are sensitive to street noise ask for room in rear but we had room in front on street with small balcony and loved watching the show below.

Enjoy

Budget stay in Florence between the Accademia and the Duomo, Relais Campanile. Relatively inexpensive for Florence. Breakfast delivered to your room. Complimentary bottle of Sangiovese. Great location.

I really liked Pensione Pendini for Florence. Great location smack in the middle of Florence. We stayed for five nights and got value pricing. Just request a quiet room at the back. Friendly service, lovely breakfast room. I would stay here again with no hesitation.
For Rome - check out hotel Delle Torre Argentina. We stayed here. great location!!! Good, solid rooms and service. Get breakfast elsewhere and save a few bucks. Minifridge in room is nice. We bought some yogurts and fruit and drinks at Despar and stored them in room.

I've followed Rick Steve's books on our last 14 trips and everywhere he lists is GREAT. Just pick one.

We used Airbnb for our stays in Florence and Rome and it worked out nicely, in that we were able to get a great location for a much lower price than a hotel in the same area. In Florence, we were near the Palazzo Vecchio and felt that was fairly central to a lot of the major sites and the river/bridges. In Rome, we stayed near Campo di Fiore which was also a nice central location to visiting the sites (and conveniently near a lot of restaurants, bars, and shopping). Both of our locations were quiet -- you can usually check the site reviews for the location to see if people make comments about noise.

We have booked Airbnb in Florence for 4 nights and Airbnb in Salerno for 2 nights. Have not gone yet but they have great reviews. We are still looking for where we will stay some other places. I'd like to know more about the Airbnb in Rome you chose.

Lydia,

We are looking for an apartment in Rome as we are going to be there for about a week. We haven't found any yet. If any one has suggestions for apartments in Rome (as well as Florence), we would be interested.

Grazie!
