We are in the very early stages of planning a return trip to Umbria and are looking for lodging recommendations for Gubbio and Spoleto. We prefer hotels, but have also staying in B&Bs on previous trips. Any suggestions would be appreciated...grazie!
We are planning a trip to see Umbria, probably spending about a week there. Others have suggested Perugia as a great place to base your lodging and take day trips to places like Gubbio, Spoleto, Assisi and more.
Thank you, geovagriffith. We have previously visited Perugia and used it as a base to see Gubbio and Spello. We stayed at Hotel Fortuna and would do so again. Since we use public transportation exclusively, sometimes we don't spend as much time as we'd like in a day trip town. That's why we would like to spend a few nights in Gubbio this time, having enjoyed it on a day trip but leaving us wanting more. We have also been to Assisi twice, so we would like to use Spoleto as a base this time to see Montefalco, Bevagna, and possibly Norcia.
Staying in charming Gubbio was a highlight of our time in Umbria and Tuscany. The nighttime feel of a town just can't happen on a day trip. It's been awhile since our visit, but we stayed at a nice three star, Hotel Gattapone, which was well located and reasonable.
Thank you Cheryl. I agree, Gubbio is very charming. I also agree with you about the drawbacks of day trips. Unfortunately, staying in every wonderful Italian town would take a lifetime. We enjoyed Gubbio on a day trip from Perugia, but soon realized it deserved more time, hence our plan to return. Thank you for the hotel recommendation, I'll check it out. Hope you have a future trip in your plans as well.
On the simple end of the scale, this 2-star hotel in Gubbio had everything I needed and also a decent restaurant: www.grottadellangelo.it.
Thank you Laura. I will look at that one too.
