Lodging Recommendations - Cinque Terre

My daughter (22 yrs old) and I are planning to be in the Cinque Terre area for two nights, June 6-7, 2012. We were planning on staying at the Youth Hostel in Manarola, but that's not looking good right now. I'm looking for a good B&B recommendation (or hotel). Thanks!

My wife and I stayed at Casa Capellini in Manarola last October. They rent 4 rooms. We had a nice simple room with a balcony sea-view and en suite bath for about 65 euros. They do not serve breakfast and accept cash only. Very clean. Located at the top of town near the church, Also close to Trattoria Dal Billy, a terrific restaurant with black pasta with seafood and squid ink, green pasta with artichokes and homemade desserts. Reservations a must. Enjoy!

We had double booked in Monterrosso. The hotel, Affitacamare Monterossa 5 Terre, recently responded to my query of "Will you be open in July?" (due to the flooding) by saying that they will reopen in March. That leaves some flex if they're behind schedule. On the other hand, Cinque Terre Holidays, which brokers rooms and apartments, told me that most all of their reservations are cancelled until further notice - probably in March, when they'll have some idea of the rebuilding progress. Not having been there, and being overly cautious- as my wife HATES scrambling for acommodations :) - I would recommend inquiring very specifically as to each hotel or B&B's re-opening plans. Yes, we all want to support the CT's disaster recovery efforts, so don't avoid the area, but be sure to ask specifically. Dave

I have about a dozen recommendations for BB or apartments in the Cinque Terre. Remeber that since the October 25 flooding of the region Vernazza is not a place I would recommend staying. For the most part, Monterosso (the largest of the villages with sandy beaches) is open but there was flooding there too. A solid choice is Riomaggiore or Manarola at the moment as you could do day trip to the other places but wont have a problem booking your room now earlier in the season.

I think Limoni Camere are beautiful as they have a private balcony overlooking the beautiful grape terraces and ocean situated just next to the castle.

I am partial to Riomaggiore as I have spent many fun days there. You must go to the eatery-wine bar Pia da ma (above the station in Riomaggiore). The view is fantastic!

Have FUN!

p.s. dont hesitate to direct meassage me on for any Cinque Terre related questions. I lived in the region for a few years. Bianca

Brian, There's also a Hostel in Corniglia, if you want "budget accommodations". Corniglia isn't as popular as the other villages mostly due to the fact that it's located high on a bluff, but it does have it's "charms" (and good Vino). I've never stayed at the Hostel, but it appears to be a bit less "restrictive" than the Manarola property, in terms of the STRICT afternoon lockout. If you'd like to stay in Riomaggiore, you might have a look at Mar-Mar Rooms. I have stayed with them in the past, and stopped by their office for a short visit when I was in that area last September. As I recall, their lodgings don't include breakfast, but that's not a big problem as that's available at Bar Centrale and Gelateria Centrale (it's a two-part breakfast, LOL). Vernazza may have some lodgings open by June. I've been in touch with people in that area recently, and some lodgings are accepting reservations as of May 1st. However, it would probably be a good idea to stay elsewhere, as accommodations will be "limited". It would be good to stop for lunch in Vernazza though. Monterosso would be the best bet. It's the largest of the five villages and therefore has the greatest choice of accommodations. A number of businesses in the "old town" section which were impacted by the flood, have re-opened in the last week or so, which is fantastic! There are lots of choices listed in the Guidebook. What price range are considering? If you have a very "generous" budget, you would have an exeptional stay at Hotel Porto Roca. You could also have a look at Hotel Villa Steno Whatever you choose, I would advise booking SOON! Buona Fortuna e Buon Viaggio!

Thanks so much for the responses and recommendations. I'm new to this fabulous website, and this was my very first post (not my last, I'm sure). Thanks again.

Brian, Some new information since my previous post. Have a look at the Thread "Current Situation in Vernazza" in this section of the HelpLine. While Vernazza won't be back to normal, it's certainly an option if you can't find lodgings elsewhere.
