My teenage son and I are driving through Venice in July (have visited before) and need a lodging recommendation for 1 night that gives us easy access to the island, parking and the highway to Milano. Any suggestions?

You're probably already aware of the obvious answer...take the train and don't worry about parking. Train deposits you directly on the island. Get a hotel at the train station and you'll have easy access to both Venice Island AND the trek to Milano on the high speed trains that leave from Venezia San Lucia with a direct shot to Milano Centrale. No muss, no fuss, no parking/petrol/tolls, no insurance and no ZTL fines, etc. And you actually get to enjoy the trip as you can sit and talk, walk around, visit the dining car, take a nap, enjoy the wine/cheese/croissants you brought on board with you.
Neither Venice nor Milan are car friendly areas

If you take Tim's suggestion it is the best.
But, if not, I use the Marriott Courtyard at the airport. Easy bus ride to Piazzale Roma, about 20 minutes. Depending on crowds the return can be a bit of wait.
