We are traveling to Rome for the 1st time in May. We are looking for a reasonably priced clean, safe room to stay the night before our morning departure home.Any suggestions for getting to the airport would also be appreciated.

Hotels near the airport tend to be expensive. You are probably better off staying in Rome and having your hotel arrange for a car to take you to the airport in the morning. You will need to take a taxi to a airport hotel or the Leonardo Express to the airport and then taxi/hotel shuttle to reach your hotel.
There is Hilton directly at Fiumicino but it is usually very expensive. There is a new Hilton Garden located nearby and a Courtyard by Marriott as well.

The Hilton at FCO is about 200 euros/night. But when you factor in the cost of transportation to FCO for early flights - it evens out. You get the best rates if you book (and pay) ahead through a travel agent.
