Lodging location advice

I'm going to Italy for the first time and will be traveling solo in September. I'll be in Rome for 7 nights at the end of my 2 week trip.

I wondered if anyone might give me comments on these locations and which area might be better for suited for my lodging desires in Rome? I'm looking for a happy medium between location, availability of restaurants, safety walking in the evening and availability of metro/bus stations if needed.

I've emailed tons of monasteries about lodging, some even 2-3 times. Many didn't respond and to my surprise most of the "well located" ones are already booked for my dates in September :(

Any thoughts?

These are the ones that I've deemed still in the running:

Domus Romana Sacerdotalis (14 MIN walk to Plaza Navona))
Via della Traspontina, 18

Beata Margherita Caiani (21 MIN)
Via Fabio Massimo, 26

Casa Maria Immacolata (21 MIN)
Via Ezio, 28

Casa il Rosario (24 MIN)
Via di Sant'Agata de Goti, 10

Casa Barberini (21 MIN)
Via Sistina, 113

They may not be booked. A lot of smaller places don't book much further out than six months. So you may be too early. May want to wait a couple of months. Also, they have small staffs that makes it hard to respond to every email. We always stay in the Termini area mostly for the convenience of transit since just about every bus and tram passes through the Termini area. It is an active area with good restaurants, hotels, and lots of people.

We usually stay close to the San Pietro/Ottaviano underground station. It's an easy ride from Termini, and it's so close to the Vatican and the Vatican Museum entrance.

Go to Google Maps and put in Rome Ottaviano. Then click on the Hotels block on top. There must be 100 hotel icons pop up by price. You can click on the icon and see what people say about the property.

Hi Frank,

The responses I received from the fully booked monasteries was that they were actually booked full for my dates. I did get one response from a monastery that they didn’t take reservations until March for September stays. And here I thought I was an early bird ;(

Thanks, David for the advice. I want to stay in a monastery instead of a regular hotel I think.

We like to stay at the Locanda Navona. It’s a nice little hotel that is centrally located. There is a taxi stand outside of the north entrance to the Piazza Navona too.

Thanks for the suggestion, Jack. I’m going to stay in monasteries or convents for this trip.

I like Domus Romana Sacerdotalis best among your choice locations. There's a really good restaurant a couple of block away named Borghiciana Pastificio Artigianale

I have stayed at Casa Il Rosario a number of times and love the location: in the Monti district near lots of restaurants, close to the Cavour metro station (one stop from Termini), close to Via Nazionale (lots of buses), close to the Colosseum, close to Piazza Venezia (again, lots of buses), etc. Does the "24 MIN" note indicate that's how long it takes to walk from there to Piazza Navona? If so, that seems a little long, although I've been told that I walk fast, but I know I've made it in 15 minutes or so.

Google Maps says Casa Il Rosario is about a mile from Piazza Navona, measuring to the nearest (SE) corner. It's allowing 24 minutes for the walk, rather than 20 minutes, which implies there's something like a hill along the way. I don't remember going that way specifically, but I stayed in Monti back in February/March, and it seemed as if I spent a lot of time walking up hills on my way to and from things I wanted to see. I did like staying in Monti.

Check out Casa di Santa Brigida in Piazza Farnese if you haven't already. It's a Swedish convent in a super location. I have no personal experience with it but used to live in the neighborhood and would often see the nuns walking to the market in Campo dei Fiori. This would put you close to many attractions such as Piazza Navona and the Pantheon and it's about a 20-minute walk to St. Peter's over the river.

Hi ponygirl813, I emailed Santa Bridgida several times over the last couple of weeks and just today got a reply. It looks like a great spot, but the cost was considerably above my budget/night :(

It looks like my best options all things considered are Domus Romana Sacerdotalis and Casa Maria Immacolata.

If I were picking strictly on location from your two finalists, I'd choose Domus Romana Sacerdotalis. It's right over the river and closer to what passes for "downtown" Rome. You'll be doing a lot of walking I assume ;)
Have fun!
