Lodging in Vernazza or Manarola

I've had the trip for 3 planned for awhile but was advised to "wait til the last month" to insure getting accommodations that are likely to be held. Now I'm getting scared I waited too long. Have searched Rick's suggestions and that of Trip Advisor and looked at websites. Bottom line: Anyone give advice for a room with a balcony/patio in Vernazza; or a quiet ac room on a side street. Or shall I try Manarola? We did 4 of the towns on one whirlwind day and this time plan to stay 3 nights. Suggestions?

I can recommend a very nice place with balcony at the top of town in Manarola…view of sea from your room is fantastic: http://www.torrettas.com/

Check tripadvisor for reviews and photos.

Will be in CT Sept 18, 19, 20. La Torretta is listed in Rick's Italy book as a "trendy, upscale, 13 room place that caters to a demanding clientele". That doesn't sound like us. We 60-70 year olds so no hostels for us. Just a comfortable place to sleep and perhaps sit and watch the world go by. Will be busy looking around the towns during the day. I LOVE the castle in Vernazza but maybe slower Manarola would be better. Got 1 recommendation for Ca'd"Andrean. Would appreciate any input. One of the 3 travelers hasn't traveled internationally very much.

I would go to Trip Advisor and check out hotels in that area ~ I have had good luck using that site!

Aria di Mare gets my vote after having spent two blissful nights there in June. Beautiful outdoor patios at the top of Manarola. Modern, clean, quiet with 270 degree views of water and terraced hillsides. I think we paid about 80 euro which is a good price in CT. You must be in decent shape to get up to the top - but then, hills and climbing stairs is par for the course for much of Italy. They are in Rick's book and also on Trip Advisor. I understand they are popular but ... you never know. Be sure to have a nice dinner at Billy's!

Bev: La Torretta is a nicer lodging and not a budget place to be sure, but I certainly wouldn’t label it as upscale by any stretch. I’m a budget traveler and not demanding…others there also appeared to be modest folk (several Germans when I was there). I would compare it to a 3 star place in Paris, or perhaps a nicer place in Varenna (like Albergo Milano). The nightly rate was a little more than what I normally prefer to pay, but breakfast on a nice patio is included, the air conditioning will run you out of the room, there’s a nice mini-bar lineup in your room, and the balcony view from your room is incredible! As I said, it’s nice…maybe a little bit of a splurge, but it’s not a Trump, W, or Ritz Carlton. Go look at the photos on their website and on tripadvisor...read the reviews. Good luck!

I always recommend Riomaggiore or Manarola to stay in, and Vernazza to visit. There are many rooms with a terrace (a must for me) in Riomaggiore & Manarola and not that many in Vernazza. Plus those 2 towns are quieter in the evening and more "real" than the now famous Vernazza. In Vernazza the tourists tend to rule the evening. But in the other towns the locals come out for a type of passagiata.
