Lodging in Varenna

My wife & I are looking for clean, quaint (if possible) & relatively modest priced lodging in Varenna. Any recommendations?

Thank you.

The ultimate list of Varenna lodging recommendations is in the Lake Como chapter of Rick's book. He has thoroughly covered lodging in that village.

My husband and I will be staying at the Orange House B&B in July 2008. We will be paying 69 Euro per night. There are no lake views but it seems to have easy access to the ferries, restaurants and the lake itself.

Orange House receives very good reviews on Tripadvisor.com.

Here is the website: www.orangehouse.org

Have a great time! Laurie

We have stayed at Orange House twice, having last been there the first week of April. It gets my vote as the best value with clean modern rooms, good breakfast, and even a limited view from the bedroom on the top floor. All for 69 Euro! It's one of those best kept secrets that's getting discovered by more travelers. Make reservations ASAP. Quaintness will cost more at another location.

I did indeed check out Rick's book, but wanted to see if there were any personal recommendations as well.

Thank you, Laurie, for the suggestion.

In 2004 we stayed in a 3d floor apartment overlooking the Lake, rented thru Hotel Montecodeno. It was magical. Every day we awaoke to ducks quacking in Italian

Thanks, Scott. It is great to know that you enjoyed the Orange House! We will be staying there in a few weeks.

My husband and I stayed at Villa Elena in April--you can't beat the location (right on the square) and the price (E45). It's clean--not fancy but sort of quaint --as Rick explains "it's not for romantics" as the rooms have twin beds only and some rooms have a shared bath. Our room had a balcony overlooking Lake Como--we stayed 3 nights and thought it was a deal.

Kit, I stayed at Albergo Olivedo on my last trip to Varenna, and had a wonderful stay. The rooms on the front are a bit noiser during the day, due to the fact that it's directly across from the Ferry dock (P.A. announcements), but at night it's very quiet. IMO, it's definitely "quaint"! However, not sure about "modest pricing" as I believe they require "half pension" at certain times of the year. That wasn't a problem for me, as I had supper at the Hotel every night anyway (Laura's Ravioli was incredible!).

Cheers!

We took Rick's advice and made a reservation at Albergo Milano. It's pricey, yes, but we're celebrating our 25th anniversary and this likely will be our only trip to Lake Como. We decided it was worth the price to make our stay as memorable as possible.

We stayed at the Hotel Eremo Guadio and the view from our terrace was fantastic! Not cheap, but if you stay in Varenna or just visit Varenna, it’s worth the walk to the hotel’s funicular to take you up to the hotel’s outdoor deck for lunch or dinner. You’ll get the same spectacular view while you are enjoying your meal!

Two years ago we rented a one-bedroom apartment (Marilena's house) right in the center of "downtown" Varenna. No a/c but it was great. Furnished with more than you need of everything. Marilena is very helpful and lives on the first floor. Staying in Varenna for a whole week was wonderful. Best pizza next door at Hotel del Sole.

We just got back and stayed at Hotel Montecodeno, large apt, we had a view, good resturant, good price/location.
