My wife and I are looking for lodging in Tuscany for 4 or 5 nights. We plan to rent a car in Florence and would like to stay at one place somewhere in Tuscany as a "home base" and visit some towns and enjoy the countryside. What are your suggestions?
We were in Florence/Tuscany in October 2006. Stayed at La Fornella in Pelago for one week. It was a great homebase to travel to all the country hill towns. Check out their website www.lafornella.com BTW..the pictures are exactly what you will see when you get there. Owner is American. They have their own vineyard..and the wine is excellent! This is still our favorite spot and the highlight of a 4 week trip in Italy.
Joe,
If you are going at the end of October take a look at http://www.montalcino-tuscany.it/sagra_del_tordo.htm
For ideas of towns to visit see http://www.slowtrav.com/italy/tuscany/hs_planning.htm
Last October we used St. Albino as our base for driving around Tuscany. It's 4 km. away from Montepulciano. We liked it because there was a good place to park our car, our hotel (I Due Cigni,) was inexpensive, family-run, very clean and comfortable. It made a great base for exploring the region.
We stayed in a lovely b&b right outside of San Gimingnano. The name of the b&b is Il Vicario, rated #2 on Trip Advisor. Fulvio and his niece Katia are wonderful hosts. The b&b was our base for four days. We traveled to Siena, Pienza, Montalcino and, of course, San Gim. This b&b is reasonalby priced and the meals prepared by Fulvio are to die for. Check it out.
Thank you all so much for your input!! You folks are GREAT!!
Hi Joe. We stayed at a fantastic agriturismo for 4 days last September. It's called Agriturismo Marciano & it's located in Siena (just 10 min from the city walls). We had a car & drove around each day to different hill towns. The agriturismo experience was unique & was the highlight of our trip. The ratings on TripAdvisor are great.
