Lodging in Sorrento

Has anyone stayed at Hotel Antiche Mura in the Town Center or Hotel Minerva on Via Capo? Any information on the noise, conveniences, transportation, quality of lodging would be helpful. I will not have a car so wondering if staying in town is the best way to go. Thanks..Joleen

We stayed across the street from Hotel Minerva, at La Tonnarella. We loved the location; we were on the sea side of the road; the Minerva is not. We had a rental car (actually, a large minivan), so getting to Via Capo was not an issue.

There is a bus that goes there, but being in town might be more convenient, at least for checking into and out of the hotel.

The views from Via Capo, at least the sea side of the street, are not to be believed. You can see Naples, Vesuvius, the Sorrentine Peninsula, and the Sorrento port itself. Every night that we were there (3 in late June/early July), there was a fireworks display.

Amazing ......

Hotel Minerva is very nice but you want to get a room on a higher floor with balcony. The pool and views are gorgeous. Directly across the street before La Tonnarella is Settimo Cielo. It is a better value, professional, very clean with good beds and shower, lots of balconies and a pool. We paid 154 Euros for three with breakfast this June with a frig and beautiful balcony on the pool level, by taking the 10% cash discount or 5% with RS book. The views on Via Capo are so beautiful as you look out towards Naples, watch the ships and ferries, the twinkly night lights or look down at Marina Grande. It's all about the views, pools and balconies. It's a 10-12 minute walk into town passing a great little market for drinks and snacks. Check www.tripadvisor.com and search for these hotels as many people have posted their view pictures

We stayed at the Ulisse Deluxe Youth Hostel. Don't let the name fool you. This was anything but a youth hostel. Tile floors, huge room, great bathroom, good food, piano and bar in the lobby. Pretty courtyard view from window. This was the nicest room we had in all of Italy (we were there for 3 weeks and had more than our fair share of hotel rooms!) and was the cheapest. For 2 people I think we paid 46 euro, but that was in the off season.

Hotel Antiche Mura was a wonderful experience. We visited Sorrento last September and spent three (3) lovely day at Hotel Antiche Mura. It was close to town center, close to the train station, and close to a bankomat. Breakfast was very good and fresh with a wonderful outside dining area. The pool looked lovely but never had a chance to swim. Was too busy with other activities. Room was very clean, quiet, and comfortable. Probably the finest hotel we have ever stayed in. We were out late one evening, when we got back to the hotel we discovered that our bed had been turned down expecting our arrival. How charming!

One word of caution. If your offered a discount or special deal make sure you get it in writing and take it with you. Rick's 2007 Italy promised a 15% discount if you showed the book. We showed the book and felt we qualified for the discount but at check out it was ignored. I protested but they refused to honor the discount claiming that it had to be listed on the confirmation email. The stiffing of the discount left a bitter taste in my mouth and a small stain on what was a wonderful experience.

We stayed at the Hotel Grand Victoria Excelsior Sorrento. Right in the middle of town with a elevator that takes you right down to the docks where the boats to Capri depart.
Also it is a short walk to the bus and train station. You can see pictures of our trip at our personal blog at http://gadtravel.blogspot.com/ The last picture in the southern Italy link was taken from the terrace of the hotel.
