Lodging in Sicily

We will be touring Sicily on our own in October. Any suggestions for nice (but not expensive) hotels/B and B's etc. would be appreciated. Thanks!

I can give you names of places we used in Catania, Taormina, Siracusa and Palermo. Let me know if these are places on your itinerary.

1) Where in Sicily? You'll get better answers if you list specific cities/towns/locations. 2) Have you checked TripAdvisor? Lots of reviews and good advice there. Since Sicily isn't covered by Rick Steves, there isn't as much information available here. 3) I've found Sicily to be generally cheaper than the rest of Italy. The most expensive lodging we booked for our upcoming trip is 70 euro. Also, define what "not expensive" means to you, as I would find 150 euro expensive but you may not. Just as a general guideline: I spent many hours researching hotels and I found that the hotels that had reviews, mostly all had good reviews. However, since Sicily is a less common destination than someplace like Rome, there are also many places that don't have any reviews at all. Also, a number of B&Bs are actually more like apartments, where the host lives off-site and you get a voucher ticket at a nearby cafe for breakfast. If you'd rather have someone there 24/7, you'll need to hunt down those kind of places or opt for hotels. Good luck!

I agree with Liz. You'll generally get more bang for the buck in Sicily as opposed to the mainland. I've only stayed in two places in Sicily and have no problem recommending them as they were both great. In Marsala we stayed at the Baglio Oneto. It's actually on the outskirts of Marsala close to the Trapani airport. Beautiful place, rooms nicely furnished, great breakfast spread, pool, nice view from the hilltop and we paid about 140 Euro a night but that was for 4 people. Only drawback was that it's a bit out of the way and you would really need a car.
Near Catania we stayed at Terra dei Sogni in Fuimmefreddo di Sicilia. Situated in the middle of an orange grove it's a bit more of an agritourismo and a little more bare bones than the Baglio but still nice with a great view of Mt. Etna. We payed 550 euro for 6 nights, again for 4. Guisseppe the owner speaks great English and was by far the most helpful for local sightseeing info than any place we've stayed in Italy. Again, a bit out of the way and you would really need a car. I would recommend getting one to see Sicily anyway.

Karen Brown's guidebooks are a great source of B&B recommendations. We've used her guidebooks over the years and have found her recommendations highly reliable. Her website has a partial number of listings from each country's book. www.karenbrown.com

You might want to go over to Tripadvisor on line. They have reviews of hotels and b and b's and also on the sicily forum some sicily experts. I got my hotel advice there.
