In Rome, we absolutely LOVED our hotel: Residenza Argentina. We paid 140 Euro per night. It is incredibly well located within walking distance of Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Piazza Venezia, etc. The rooms are wonderful, but best of all, it is small and personal - the front desk staff bent over backwards to help us. They were kind, spoke English very well, helpful and very courteous. Breakfast included, it is really a great place. You can have a look on TripAdvisor - reviews are extremely positive.

In Florence, we stayed about a 2 minute walk from the Train Station at Hotel Alba. Again, this hotel was outstanding - clean, great breakfast, safe, free Internet - and it was only 90 Euros per night.

In both cases, when I return, we will definitely stay at these places once again.

Scott's description of Residenza Argentina also applies to Hotel Smeraldo. (All except the breakfast included part. Hotel Smeraldo has it available for 7 Euros/person, but you can opt out and eat well from a cafe or market right across the alley.) Great location! I highly recommend Hotel Smeraldo.

As for Florence, we stayed at Hotel David, which we also loved. This one was off the beaten track; across the Arno River from the main sights and close to Piazzale Michelangelo. It's a ~15-20 minute walk to Ponte Vecchio. Wonderful place, spacious rooms and bathrooms, some with balconies, delicious breakfast and happy hour, helpful, friendly staff, free private parking, free internet (wi-fi in the rooms), limited free international phone calls, the list goes on ...

Just returned from two week stay in Italy. I highly reccomend these two hotels. In Rome, Hotel Italia. Great location in the Termini area close to sights and bus stops. Wonderful staff, great breakfast, nice size room and very clean. We paid 130 euro per night (+ 10 euro per night for a/c) for a Quadrupple. In Florence we stayed at Hotel Collodi which is in the San Lorenzo area very close to sights and steps away from the Mercato Centrale (Food Market)and San Lorenzo Market. We had a tremendous Quad (two levels with the two twin beds in the upstairs loft)with a/c and large bathroom. Very nice staff and very clean. We paid 129 euro per night for the Quad.
