lodging in ostia antica

We will be traveling to and from Rome by train for a couple of days while staying in Ostia Antica. Can you suggest lodging that is close to the train station in Ostia - maybe even within walking distance? It doesn't have to be fancy - just clean, safe, and comfortable.

carol Just a quick answer as I'm running off... there have been a couple of questions like this in the past and I believe the consensus was there is nothing - absolutely nothing - in the immediate vicinity of Ostia Antica but one roadside restaurant. There are some places to stay in Ostia Lido down on the coast. Nowhere near walking distance. Good luck...

Thanks - that's what I suspected as I searched the internet. Any suggestions for Ostia Lido?

Through this board I was told about the Hotel Club Isola Sacra in Ostia, where friends and I will stay for one night because of its close proximity to the airport. Google it to see if it suits you. We like that they have a shuttle into Rome (€12) and a shuttle to the airport (€6)

We had a great time in Ostia Lido this past May. Pics and video here: Ostia Lido May 2011 You'll find that most of the lodging there is along the shoreline. Try both venere.com (type in "Lido di Ostia") and tripadvisor.com to see what I'm talking about. You might try Hotel Sirenetta. It's about a ten minute walk from the station. And just FYI, the area around the train station is fairly "scruffy" but perfectly safe. Lots of graffiti, as is the case in most of Italy. Google Maps has great Street View coverage of Ostia Lido. However, if you go a few train stops farther south (still in Ostia) from the main station, you could stay at Hotel Caravel. I don't know this place from experience, but it's right next to the Christopher Columbus train station. Check it out. Happy travels.
