Does anyone have a "Rick Steves" type value housing recommendation for Genoa, near the downtown Port area?
Also what are the "must see" sights?

One of the other guidebooks would probably provide info regarding acceptable hotels. LET'S GO has some listings. www.venere.com is where I would look. Then go to TripAdviser.com and read reviews. Most of us keep on going when we get to Genoa. The city is known for old palaces and an aquarium. It's a port city and has some seedy areas.
Good idea from Swan - use Venere and then check reviews from Trip advisor. I go to Genoa each year and I quite like the place. True there isn't a lot there but it is worth a quick visit. The old part is full of tiny winding streets and really fascinating shops. There are also some lovely old churches and good galleries. I'd love to say I've been to the galleries but we are always there on a Monday and they are closed but the people we see say they are worth a visit.
I don't know about the aquarium, again never been, but does have a good reputation.
There is also a lovely area called Nervi just outside of Genoa, sort of like a suburb. It is only 3 stops out on the train and is right on the sea. It has beautiful public gardens and a wonderful promenade to walk along right on the waterfront. As you get out of the train it is in front of you.
I think you you could spend a day or two there.
