We are visiting the Gargano area for 3-5 nights t
In late September and would like recommendations on where to stay near a city center so we can walk to restaurants, etc.
Easy: Vieste.
(Shhhh - Don't tell anyone....)
Have a car?
What is your budget?
If you want to stay near restaurants and the town center, Vieste and Peschici are the best options. Vieste offers a selection of restaurants, cafés and shops that are within walking distance. Peschici is smaller. Has a charming historic center. For a stay of three to five nights either Vieste or Peschici would be a base for exploring the Gargano area. In September the area should be quieter than, during the summer months.
I loved my stay at IL CASTELLINO RELAIS in Vieste. It is across the street from the beach and about a mile walk into town....
But it's really good to have a car in Gargano. The best restaurant we tried was a long drive inland, not possible with a bus.. But there are good places to eat in Vecchia Vieste as well...
Definitely Vieste, the season tapers off fast in September but you will still have a good choice of restaurants in Vieste. Don't forget to try paposcia.

We were there in the third week of September (2025) and it was perfect. Still lively but not crowded, lovely weather, delightful...
(shhhhhhh...)
Vieste or Peschici are the best choices, but having or not having a car will make a difference on which specific hotel to stay, since both towns have traffic and parking restrictions.
Gargano is a place where having your own wheels help.
Thank you all for the tips! We will have a car and are planning on staying in Vieste.
