lodging in Dolomites via train&foot between Bolzano and Val Gardena

We're planning 4 nights in the Dolomites. We will be traveling by train from Switzerland to Bolzano and then with the bus to our lodging, whereever that may be. We would like to be close to the Dolomite hiking trails and somewherewithin walking distance to restaurants but more quiet than staying in the center of town. Small hotels, B&Bs, Agritourism would all be acceptable. We received some great hiking tips from another traveler. If you have anymore recommendations for the area, please include them. Thank you!

We did this trip last September. We stayed in Castelrotto and found the village to be charming and extremely convenient to all of the hiking trails that we were interested in. We loved walking through the village at night to many lovely restaurants, . We stayed at Haus Silbernagl. Fabulous breakfast each morning and charming owner. Enjoy.

Agriturismo you can reach on foot would be hard to find. I've longed to stay at Berghaus Zallinger, but without a car you would be tied to the operating hours for the Florian lift to get back and forth to Saltria. http://www.zallinger.com/ Some of the towns in Val Gardena are so apread out they don't really feel like towns. I like the look of this place in Santa Cristina, and will probably stay there next time: http://www.villamartha.it/ Up at Alpe di Siusi, take a look at Berghotel Zorzi: http://www.berghotelzorzi.com/eng/index.html There is not really a town here; the "town" of Compatsch is more of a collectioin of hotels, pretty spread out. It is best to take half-board at your hotel if staying here; there aren't really any restaurants open for dinner, apart from the hotel dining rooms. The views up here are gorgeous, and you have good access to the trailhead for the Bolzanohütte hike.

Thank you Sally and Lola (again!) for your tips. I will do some look into them. I appreciate your help!
