Lodging for early flight out of Rome's Fuimicino Airport

Looking for lodging recommendations for our last night in Rome and a Sunday morning 7:50am flight out of Fuimicino. We will need to be at the airport around 5am and will have an Avis rental car to get rid of. Wife and I will be spending two weeks touring southern Italy in October. We will be starting with three nights in Rome, then hitting a couple ancestral homes before touring the Amalfi coast and ending back in Rome on the final day. With such an early arrival for airport, I am thinking it might be most convenient to spend the last night at one of the box hotels at the airport. Would it make any sense to drop the rental car off Saturday evening and take the hotel's shuttle direct to airport? Our first time to Rome, so am unfamiliar with that airport or where we need to be. Our flight out (first leg) is to London. Your thoughts or experiences would be welcome. Thanks all.

The amazing Ron In Rome deals with this head on at his site. Here's the intro: On many travel sites, this seems to be one of the most frequently asked questions. Most often it's phrased as, "I have an early morning flight from FCO and would like to know the best Airport Hotel to stay at – Can you make a recommendation?" If I had to do it and this is just my opinion, I would drop off car Saturday and stay by airport especially as you have such an early flight.

If you drop off the car early, you also reduce your rental car bill!

I would definitely drop the car off early. If you're looking to stay in Fiumicino at a hotel with a shuttle, look into the Best Western. I stayed there before my early flight last summer and it was pleasant. They have wifi and a breakfast. Let them know what time you need the shuttle.
