Can you recommend a goo area for lodging in Florence? There are so many areas that I am having difficulty settling in on one. We will be there for two nights without a car so would like something within walking distance to most sights.
Thank You!

I have stayed at Hotel Bigallo around the corner from the Baptistry (smallish green neon sign you can see from the bigger street), and Hotel Paris about a block from the train station near Santa Maria Novella; both good, in my opinion.
In Sept, we loved B4 Astoria. Near SMN & Medici chapel, easy walk from the train station. Great view from their rooftop terrace & stunning breakfast room. In 2012, we stayed at Hotel Axial closer to Ponte Vecchio.
Just to comment, Lisa, that central Florence is relatively compact and walkable from just about anywhere. We stayed a few blocks north of Museo San Marco - which is a little further off the main tourist tramp as many tourists would choose - and went everywhere on foot.
I just wouldn't choose something outside of an area bordered to the east, north and west by the SS67 roadway or too far south of the Arno.
In the Santa Maria Novella neighborhood there are several nice hotels and it is walking distance from the train station. We were there last month and stayed at Hotel L'Orologio and loved it! This seemed to be the perfect location because it was a five minute walk to the Duomo, but far enough away that we weren't right in the hoards of tourists.
Florence is very walkable, which gives you a lot of options. I loved the Hotel Torre Guelfa, near the Ponte Vecchio and Uffizi (but also a 15 minute walk from the train station, which I utilized both for day trips and my trip to Pisa to fly home). The rooms have a lot of character, breakfast is great, the staff is incredibly helpful and friendly, and sitting on top of the tower, overlooking the city, is priceless. Have a wonderful time!
SMN area is great. We stayed at hotel Pendini and really enjoyed it. Florence has lots of good options. It's more a matter of how far you want to walk with luggage and budget. Places along the perimeter may be cheaper and just as nice if you can walk a little further. Examples - Santa Croce area, Oltrarno area.
