Lodging and trip options

My wife and I may add in Lake Como by way of traveling from Lucern, and according to the train details, we would be going through Lugano and arriving into Como's train station. Being my first trip to Italy, I have no idea where I would start for a one nights stay in the Como area. Where would be a feasible place to stay in conjunction with a bus or small train ride from the train station. So we are looking at a location around the lake as well as lodging being clean, comfortable, and not break the bank. We would like to stay under $125 US. Or if you also see a better pattern of train options and stops coming from Lucern that would be helpful too.

Also, thoughts on our trip itinerary? 1st night, Zurich, 2nd night Como, 3rd and 4th night Venice, 5th and 6th night Perugia, 7th,8th, and 9th night Florence, 10th and 11th night Cinque Terre, and 12th night Milan. Any suggestions of changes or thoughts would be appreciated. My biggest hangup is the 2nd night by the way.

Justin,

I agree with Doug in that you're trying to fit too many places into a very short Itinerary. Given the circumstances, I would also probably drop Perugia on this trip, as it's the greatest distance from your other locations. Keep in mind that you'll need to allow travel time between each place, so you need to "build this" into your planning.

One suggestion you might consider for Lago di Como would be to stay in Varenna rather than Como. It's a wonderful and relaxing location. To reach Varenna, the easiest route is to go through Milan. There's a direct train from Zurich to Milan departing 09:01, arriving 12:50 (Time 3H49M, Cisalpino, reservations compulsory). The train ride from Milan to Varenna is about one hour, and depending on which Hotel you choose it's usually an easy walk from the train station. BTW, be sure to exit the train immediately on arrival in Varenna, as it only stops for about a minute! From Varenna you might consider a day trip to the elegant town of Bellagio (only about a 20 minute boat ride - very easy!).

The remainder of your train trips will be fairly straightforward. Have you decided which of the five C.T. villages to stay in?

Good luck with your planning!

Justin - I think you're attempting too many cities in the short time you'll be there. Especially since you're planning trips between cities that require multiple transfers. On your first trip, I'd suggest choosing between Como and the Cinque Terre, not both, and eliminating Perugia. Add nights in Como and Venice.

Justin,
I agree with other postings re: too many stops. Re: Varenna on Lago de Como, we stayed at RS recommended Orange House B&B on the main street with a very short walk from train station and the lake. The double room was very modern and comfortable with ensuite bath. It was a very reasonable 70 Euros in Sept 2007. The hosts were very gracious and we enjoyed the breakfast. Varenna was one of our favourite towns in Italy and the ferry system allows you to visit other towns around the lake.
