Flying into and out of Catania....any suggestions for lodging for the first night and which direction to start our trip--go north first or south and on around to the west???? We plan to have about 7-9 days in Sicily. Not sure yet if we will rent a car or use bus/train from point to point. All suggestions welcome as this is my first trip to Sicily.
If you might post again and put "Sicily" in the topic line, you might get more replies. My husband and I have made two trips to Sicily, of at least two weeks each (half of the island each time). Siracusa is my overall favorite, and I also loved Cefalu. We used bus/train exclusively, and we had some "transportation adventures" but we still prefer that to the hassle of car rental. You could easily go to Siracusa first, then cross the interior to Cefalu and perhaps stop in Taormina on the way back to Catania. We spent a couple of nights in Catania and enjoyed the city, but you may not have enough time to do all the good places!
"adventures" or nightmares???? The places you mention are definitely on my list. I am still torn between car rental and local transport. Made up my mind to do buses/trains, then most all the replies rec'd said "rent a car." I have driven the length of Italy and back in years past and know the hassles of parking, etc. Still can't decide. Now am concerned that 8 days is not enough to cover the island for a first glance. Seems as if you are saying better to do part of Sicily one trip, then other part next time? I had wanted to go to Puglia and Basilicata for a few days also on this trip. Will repost my query with "Sicily" in title. Do you have names of places you stayed so I could look up on Internet? Many thanks for your advice!
