My wife and I are going to Italy this coming November for at least three weeks. As part of our visit, we are planning to drive through the center of Italy starting in Padua (Padova), down to the toe, over to the heel and up the Adriatic Coast back to Padua. Does anyone have experience traveling in Italy at that time of year with respect to lodging accommodations? Should we be looking at getting reservations? We really don't have an itinerary and would prefer to be spontaneous, stopping when and where we choose, but if accommodations are an issue and reservations are recommended, we would greatly appreciate input.
I've traveled in Italy in November, and the only issue I encountered was that a number of hotels in Sorrento were closed. It seems common in southern Italy for for hotels to close for a few weeks in low season to remodel, make repairs, and so on. The upside is that prices are soft, and you can find bargains in the places that are open. Our hotel of choice replied to my email inquiry that they were sorry they would be closed, and directed us to their sister property. We ended up staying in a 4 star hotel with a gorgeous balcony view of the harbor, and paid half their high season rates.
You will be OK. Just bring along an ipad and check out the areas a day or two ahead of time so that you have an idea of what may be available. And the local TI can always provide a list.
You do not necessarily need a reservation, because the hotels that are open will not be busy. This is one of the cheapest months to travel in Italy, so be ready to get some BARGAINS! We went to Florence and Rome in November and we stayed at 5 star hotels for 2 star prices.
Ciao!
Thanks to everyone who has replied. We suspected that lodging accommodations could be a little easier to find and that prices could be better during that time of year, but it's always good to hear from other travelers. Thanks again, Jim
