I will be in Florence for about 8 hours and would like to leave my bag in the train station or, perhaps, someplace close by. Are there lockers or someplace else (a hotel?) that might hold my bags for a fee?

There's a left luggage place (rather hidden) near the train tracks. You can't see it from the waiting room, which is why I say it's hidden. We missed it and only saw it as we were getting on the train. Persevere, ask somebody, and you'll find it.
