Lockers for luggage in train stations in Italy and Switzerland

We are planning to do some 3-5 day trips around Italy and Switzerland by train and would like to park luggage in locker while we sightsee in some of the cities before we move on to our overnight stop? Please let us know about the locker situation. Thank you.

Cecilia & Rick,

What cities are you planning to visit in Italy?

The major cities (Milan, Venice, Verona, Florence, Rome, etc...) have luggage storage facilities at the main train station but some of the small cities may not.

I have not been in Switzerland so cannot help you there.

@Cecilia & Rick

Lockers and luggage hold counters are available at a lot of stations in Switzerland. You can get more details at the Swiss Rail site. Enter the cities you will be visiting and then select the "equipment" tab for locker info. Head over to this blind hot link:

I'd be surprised if you find actual "lockers" anywhere, but lots of places have luggage counters that are staffed by humans. In Italy they're called "Deposito Bagagli" and the major stations have them.

C&R,

It would help to have some idea which towns you'll be visiting. Some stations in Italy have Left Luggage (Deposito Bagagli) facilities, and others don't. As I recall, some of the stations have staffed luggage offices, which are operated by a separate company (not the rail network).

There are in fact lockers in some Swiss stations. Apparently they don't have the same security fears as elsewhere.

Man in Seat 61 has some references about Italianluggage storage.

The vast majority of stations in Switzerland do in fact have actual lockers. Off the top of my head you can also find them in Holland, Belgium,Germany, France, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Poland, Austria, Spain, Hungry, Portugal, and Denmark.

They're still alive and kicking.

The major Italian cities do have bag storage, as stated earlier. For destinations covered in Rick's Italy book, the introduction to each chapter will normally address the issue, under "Arriving." I also agree with the blanket statement that nearly all Swiss stations have lockers or other bag storage (as well as Switzerland has a very comprehensive plan of paid baggage handling).
