Locations to vist not too far from Aosta?

Hi Everyone,

We originally planned on a week in Tuscany but the easy jet plane schedule to get there was too constricting. We will be in Chamonix and wondered about visiting Aosta, Italy and surrounding areas. Two nights in Aosta seems sufficient and we are trying to think of other areas near by that would be interesting. We have been to Stressa (lake Maggiore).

Are there any cute little hill towns you know of? We will have a car and we don't mind driving 2 hrs, more or less, to get there.
We need to return the rental car in France.
Thank You for your thought :)

From Aosta you quickly enter the plain of the Po where travel times are shorter and roads straighter. Near Biella a picturesque town to visit is Ricettao di Candelo. Further afield, Aosta to the town of Bra, for example, is about 2 1/2 hours and there are numerous pretty cities around. Try this article: http://www.apathtolunch.com/2015/12/an-italian-itinerary-small-cities-in.html I liked Saluzzo quite a bit.

You do realize the Mont Blanc tunnel will cost about 44E one way and 55E round trip. If you have flexibility you could drive through Piedmont to Liguria and along the coast to return your car in Nice.

Hi Mike,

Thanks so much for the great link! What a help it is and will share with DH tonight to figure out a plan. I was a little sad we couldn't visit Tuscany and had such a difficult time finding an itinerary for the Aosta area. We had considered driving along the coast and returning the car in Nice, just need to see how long the train ride to Paris will be. And if you are the author of the article, great job! Very kind of you to post it for me. :)

Yes, I was aware of the tunnel toll (sigh) but we are so close to Italy and can't leave Europe without stopping by and having a little bit of Italy's great food and culture at the end of our trip.
