We are planning our family's first 7-day trip to Rome in December. I am considering 3 apartments. (all vrbo) #1 - on the via Labicana close to the Colosseum #2 - near Castel Sant Angelo #3 - on the via Santa Maria in Monticelli (Navona area)
The first two are about the same price. The third one is 260 euros more. All suggestions are welcome!
I have stayed in a VRBO apartment on Via Labicana in '08, if it is the same one, you will love it. I am returning to the same apartment next month. We had no problem getting around from the apartment. Transportation is close enough, but we only used the metro to get to the Vatican and Termini. We walked everywhere else. Hope this helped a little. Lydia
Rome streets are really well-covered in Google Streetview. Have you tried looking around those locations that way?
Google Streetview saved us from booking in a hotel that had a McDonald's right in front. :-)
While this is not a comment on the 3 choices, Teal, I hope you won't mind if I recommend a great apartment building near Piazza Navona, http://www.palazzo-olivia.it. We stayed at Palazzo Olivia last October and will be back in December for a 9-night stay over Christmas. Most expensive apartment is a 2 bedroom for 200-250 euro per night depending on dates. It was a very convenient location, and a quiet place as well.
A second vote for Palazzo Olivia. We stayed there for a week in late June and were thrilled with it. Loads of great small restaurants and cozy cafes in the area. And just a very short walk to Piazza Navona, near but not too clsoe so that you get all the commotion. Also it is very close to bus stops and taxi stands if you plan to use those means of transportation.
Do like Michael suggests and Google street view the area! Very important. Next, do they have reviews by satisfied customers? And...have you verified what actual floor the apt is on, and if they have a working elevator? We rented an awesome apt (VRBO #13150) in the Via Veneto area, that was about a mile out of town. It was three blocks to the train station (easy acess from the airport). It overlooked a park and a river, was close to lots of neat restaurants, and shops, and it was on two hi-speed express bus lines, that wisked you into town, at all hours of the day and night. It is always a good idea to get the bus and Metro map, and verify your transportation options. Sometimes a unit that is further away is actually closer than you think!
Thank you for the advice. I appreciate all the posts.
Third vote for Palazzo Olivia! Had a great experience there and the location is excellent!! The Piazza Navona area is my preference. Would stay there again in a heartbeat. Have a great trip.
