We are staying in Varenna and will there on my husband's birthday (a biggie)on a Monday at the end of April. I'm trying to find a restaurant for dinner that offers something a little different to make it memorable (other than being in what sounds like one of the world's most beautiful places). Of course, Iwould like good food to be part of that memory! (It seems that in this area you either sacrifice good food for ambience/views or vice versa.) Beyond that, we are limited by the fact that many restaurants are closed on Mondays. Locanda dell' Isola Comacina is one that keeps popping up in my searches and has piqued my interest. Although it obviously didn't start out as a tourist trap 60 years ago, it sounds like it could very easily be that now. And, in fact, I have read some really awful reviews but I have also more really good ones. Has anyone tried it?
I'd welcome any suggestions that we could reasonably reach from Varenna for dinner. We will have a car but don't want to drive too far since I'm sure wine will be part of the meal and celebration. In fact, a taxi might be a better option, I imagine.
