Local Travel in Positano

Help! We will be in Positano July 24-27, staying at an airbnb that I booked months ago. Unfortunately, I did not do my research and did not realize just exactly how steep the streets and houses on the hills are! Our airbnb is a 4 min. walk from the Chiesa Nouva SITA bus stop, quite a long ways up from the city center and beach! I've been reading about smaller local busses that run in Positano on other forums, but I haven't been able to find any information other than a casual mention here and there. Can anyone help?

Others have suggested that if one is staying quite a distance from beach and city center, one could walk down and take a taxi back up. Anyone know if taxis are readily available and what the approximate cost might be?

The bus runs along the main road in & out of town & I think you would have to walk to that road to catch a taxi. I don’t recall any traffic other than deliveries outside that road. Be forewarned that taxi rates are very expensive.

I would contact your airbnb host and inquire about info for the Interno Positano bus. They can probably point you in the right direction. I'm seeing a number of links out there than are supposed to be for the bus map/info but pull up a tour/transfer company, Otherwise, use the SITA buses to/from the Chiesa Nouva stop.

No criticism at all meant for you, OP, as you are already beating yourself up but for anyone else thinking they'd like to stay in Positano but do not like climbing steps, please reference photos of the town! Also read reviews of properties carefully for just how far they are from the waterfront - if that's where you want spend your time- from bus stops, and comments about how much work they are to access on foot. As Marika said,, taxis are reported to be quite expensive.

The town center is a good hike down to the water and there are no vehicles down there. We did see some golf carts strictly for deliveries. If you go to the beach be sure to get good shoes for the water as there are lots of pebbles.

Did you look at the address or coordinates on google earth? we rented a villa in Positano as well and I looked at it on there. you can see the topography and zip around to see the various staircases that you would need to take to get to your villa. That will give you the best idea of what you are dealing with. It helped me tremendously.

We were just there for a day trip.
There are porters at the ferry site that will carry baggage for you.
I read about them before our visit and noticed them while there.
I believe they are called "blue porters"

I was on a bus in Positano, heading to Montepurtuso, and someone on the bus said the porter she had carried her luggage so fast that she had a hard time keeping up with him.

Thanks, everyone for all your helpful advice. After doing more research, and even looking for alternative lodgings, we decided to stay at our airbnb. We love to hike on vacations, so we'll consider this a quintessential Positano experience of traversing hilltop streets and stairs. I looked at google map and I am assuming the white and gray dotted lines are stairs that are short cuts from the zig zagging streets like Viale Pasitea. I read the reviews again on our airbnb website, and now I remember why I chose it - for the beautiful view from our high hilltop balcony overlooking down on to Positano and the sea. The daily exercise will allow us to indulge in pasta and gelato guilt free!

So, for anyone else in similar position as me, here is what I found:

The SITA bus schedule for Praiano is more up to date than what is listed on the Positano website. Positano still shows only until June 16, 2019, while Praiano website has the summer schedule from June 17 - September 8, 2019. During the busy summer months, it looks like the SITA bus does stop at both Sponda and Chiesa Nuova stops in both direction.

Here is the schedule for Mobility Amalfi Coast bus schedule for Praiano and Positano: Mobility Amalfi Coast
This bus just goes from Chiesa Nouva to Praiano Marina and back, including stops at Sponda in both direction.

The 12 euro SITA pass will get us unlimited SITA bus and Mobility Amalfi Coast bus pass for 24 hours. We'll be arriving late afternoon from Sorrento on July 24, so purchasing this when we arrive will get us to our airbnb and take us to Amalfi and Ravello the next day. Then we can purchase another one the 3rd day which will be good through day 4 when we leave Positano to go to Sorrento in the morning. Perhaps the buses will all be too crowded and we'll end up walking most of the time, but I feel better that there are options. One reviewer said they rented a scooter near the airbnb, just to get around Positano, but not sure if that's good advice, given the crowd and the zig zag roads.

We may skip the SITA pass on the 3rd day and go back to Sorrento by high speed ferry instead.
