What are the best transportation apps for Milan for the metro and trams? Venice for vaparetto? Thank you!!!!

I used Google Maps for vaporetto - seemed to work well enough. I haven't been to Milan in years so haven't used a smart phone there, but I'd guess Google Maps would work well enough for public transit there too. It has worked well for me in most major cities in Europe.
If you will be taking trains within Italy, I found the Trenit app very handy - allows you to buy train tickets directly on your phone and also to get real-time train arrival updates and platform info (in case you are connecting to another train).
