Has anyone taken this fairly new train down the amalfi coast and do you know how much it costs

There is no train service along the Amalfi Coast. There is a train station in Sorrento which is on the Bay of Naples and trains go from there to Naples (Circumvesuviana), it is a private company. Salerno which is at the southern end of the Amalfi Coast has a train station which is on the national public network.

Jane I read about the train too, I would like to find out more, we wanted to take it to Salerno and then take the bus back to Sorrento....I'll sure someone else must know something.

Jane - where did you read about a train. I have been visiting the area once usually twice a year for 30 years, the last time in 2008 and next visit this October. I think I would have noticed or heard about a train line being built as it does take some time to do so. The topography of the Amalfi Coast would require significant engineering works.

Are you referring to the new train cars that are being introduced on the Circumvesuviana service between Naples and Sorrento?

Yes, Linda. It is the circumvesuviana. What is your opinion of that train? Do you know how long it takes to get to Sorrento and is there a view. Or is it better to take a private car to Sorrento, actually Positano is where we are going.

The existing train is a bit uncomfortable, plastic seats and no air condtioning. If it is not crowded, which it can be at times and you may have to stand, it is bearable. The new cars should make the journey more pleasant but the introduction is staged so no guarantees. Any views are distant and until you get near Sorrento, of Naples' suburban towns and long tunnels through the mountains. I find it interesting but would not call it that scenic.

These days, depending on arrival time, we either get the airport bus to Sorrento or a private transfer. If I were you I would take a private transfer because it will be quicker plus no transport changes with luggage. Just sit back, relax and look forward to your holiday. A search on the Positano Forum on TripAdvisor will give you names of reputable car companies.

Have a great holiday.
