Local Attractions on Holiday?

My wife and I are planning a Venice-Florence-Rome 8 day trip. We are thinking either September or October but have heard people say that a lot of the locals could be gone on holiday. We hope to occasionally get away from the touristy spots and try the local food. Is there a time of year to avoid so we can get the full experience?

Locals go on holiday July and August, AFAIK. Now in a seasonal tourist destination, like the Dolomites, that might be true, Not on the Rome-Florence-Venice axis. Its business as usual.

Several restaurants in Florence close for either all or half of August, and I suspect it would be similar in Rome and Venice, so August is the month to avoid. You'll be fine in September or October.
