Have been reading that the port area of Livorno is quite a dump; trying to decide where to go from this port. Have been to Cinque Terre and Florence, but friends have not. Was also thinking of Pisa. Any suggestions for a day trip on this stop? There are 4 of us. Thanks!
Not Cinque Terre as it would amount to a day touring Italian transportation. The city close to Livorno most praised is Lucca. If you can combine it with Pisa, even better.
How many hours do you have?
Pisa and Lucca are closest (Lucca about 45 min away, Pisa is next to Livorno). You can probably visit both in a day.
A trip to Florence is at least 2 hours each way, when everything is accounted for (transfers to station plus almost 1.5 hr train ride). So if you go to Florence, you need to subtract at least 4 hours just for travel time, or maybe 5 to be safe and not miss the boat. Not sure how much would be left for you to visit.
Cinque Terre is also a couple of hours each way (1.5+ hrs on the train + transfers port to station).
Thanks for the tips! Will probably do Pisa/Lucca, as I have not been there; will probably try the train. Don't want to spend a lot of time getting to Firenze or CT.
If you get Rick's Mediterranean Cruise Ports, he has all the logistics of visiting Florence, Pisa, and Lucca from Livorno. The book will also have information on many (if not all) of your other cruise stops.
