Living in Italy in Winter

We are looking for recommendations near Rome for a winter destination where would rent a house and immerse ourselves in the local culture. We want to be within 30km or thereabouts so we can use Rome transportation hubs to go on excursions while we are there. But also desiring a charming community to call home base. Any suggestions anyone on towns to consider? Thank you!

Rome. I would stay in the city, especially in winter. You can immerse yourself in the culture right in the city. Maybe stay in the Trastevere district or Prati district for a more local flavor, but I wouldn’t stay outside of Rome in the winter, especially since you are relying on public transportation.

unless you have this sorted by European Union citizenship, are you aware of the Schengen regulations for length of stay?

I would stay in Rome and use the public transportation to travel out to places of interest instead of the opposite.

As for the Schengen visa - they are strict about the 90 day limit (and then 180 out of the Schengen area). This trip I applied for a six month tourist visa but found that they were not being issued at the time I applied. So I settled for the 90 day visa and rented an apartment for 87 days in Rome. I arrived at the beginning of February, which is enough winter for this person who lives in northern climes!
