In about 2 years, my husband and I want to live in Italy for 6 to 9 months. Both of us have close family in Genova, Calabria and Le Marche. We want to rent a villa in Umbria or another central Italy location as our home base. Initially, we need to spend about 2 to 4 weeks in a private language class - or small classes. We've been to Italy before and have studied alot, but still need the immersion to get ready for our adventure. Our goals, other than visiting our family on 3 to 4 day visits in the various regions are: 1) my husband wants to hunt/fish- he hunts just about anything in the US and is open to what Italy has to offer. 2) We want to learn to cook in the different regions 3)We want visit Zurich, Brugge, Muenster - I think I spelled that right - We like Alt bier and Austria. So an Octoberfest visit is a must, preferably in a small town. We will travel by train and won't rent a car, but may need reliable private transportation (limos). We probally won't visit Venice or that region. Our savings account mission has already started and I think that 2 years should do it. Plus we have to finish our current project. Personal information. Right now, I am 45 and my husband is 52. We are physically fit and healthy. Also - what about getting a work VISA. We do software consulting and may want to get a short term project in Italy. This is alot of information, but it will hopefully get us started. We have so many questions, but I think this is enough for us at first. Any advice you can provide will be great. Thank you, Jean Ann & Billy Lopezzi
The first big hurdle is the VISA -- a tourist visa is one thing, a work vise is a huge hurdle and you probably cannot get it with someone locally sponsoring you. For the tourist visa you will need to demonstrate adequate resources, insurance, etc. that will cover your requested time. For the work visa you may need to work your family contacts.
Contact roninrome.com. His wife is working there and he is free lancing. He will have go insight for you.
Do you mean this Muenster:
I'm just surprised because it's so different from anything else you mention and quite a distance from Umbria (13 hours by train minimum, if you miss a connection easily 20 hours). But if you're really interested I can give you a few tips, lived there myself for 8 years. Though it does fit for you love of Altbier: Muenster is famous for its "Altbierbowle" - Altbier mixed with strawberries or peaches ....
Jean Ann,
As the others have mentioned, your first stop should be the nearest Italian Embassy, so that you can get some idea on the Visa details. If your parents were born in Italy, you might enquire on whether this might offer any benefits.
You might enjoy having a look at www.expatsinitaly.com/ as there's a LOT of information there on living in Italy.
Cheers!
Thank you for the Visa information. I did not know about that. But 90 days will be much easier our bank account.
