liquor purchase on cruise

Taking a Oceanic cruise 10/16-26 Venice to Barcelona. 2 questions 1-to avoid the high costs of drink packages how about buying spirits (non wine) in port and carry back on ship to consume? 2-guideline for end of cruise tipping.

  1. The cruise companies figured that out a long time ago, the answer is usually "No". There usually is a process to bring any alcohol on, they may hold purchases until final disembarkation, but generally do not allow any alcohol on to just drink on the ship.

I’m assuming you mean Oceania? No, your liquor will be confiscated and usually returned when you disembark. Some lines allow limited amounts of wine, check with them. Packages work if you really drink, otherwise buy as you go and be prepared for a big bill. As for tips, they are automatically added based on your accommodations (suites pay higher). You can adjust the amount charged when you are aboard, even eliminating tips, but don’t do that. These folks really live on the tips. We carry some cash to tip for extraordinary service and that has always paid off.

Agree with the others. I don't know Oceanic policy but it will be on their web site. Most cruise lines have some limitations on what can be carried on board. Most cruise lines will xray any bags brought on board so it nearly impossible to sneak anything on board. We cruise mostly on Holland America and their policy is one bottle of wine initially when boarding. After that anything else carried on board is held till departure. Also (need to double check) I think we could bring a bottle of wine on board, have it delivered to the dining room and pay a corkage fee of $15, maybe $20 to serve with dinner. We used to do that frequently but have not on the last couple of cruises so I don't know if that policy still exists. Security coming on board is fairly tight.

Read the web site, it is all there.

From Oceania's FAQ page (2021)

We are pleased to inform you that Oceania Cruises has revised the
policy for bringing wine onboard.

We have now increased the limit to 6 bottles per stateroom. The
exception being the world cruises for which we will allow up to 60
bottles per stateroom however this only applies to guests who are
booked on the full world cruise or any of the variations of the full
world cruise as listed below.

This includes guests flying with their own wine, or purchasing it on
shore, any additional purchases above and beyond the three bottles
made during the cruise at any of the ports may be held for you until
the end of the cruise.

We ask that guests let us know they are bringing wine on-board so the
ship can be advised. Guests are welcome to enjoy their wine in the
comfort and privacy of their stateroom or suite, or, if they prefer,
may enjoy their wine in one of the ship’s dining rooms. Any wine
consumed in the dining room or a public area will be subject to a
corkage fee of $25.00 per bottle.

From Oceania Terms & Conditions - Gratuities (2021)

How much you choose to tip is a personal matter and completely at your
discretion. For your convenience the following gratuities are
automatically added to your shipboard account. For guests occupying
staterooms, gratuities of $16.00 per guest, per day will be added. For
guests occupying Penthouse, Oceania, Vista or Owner's Suites where
Butler Service is provided, gratuities of $23.00 per guest, per day
will be added. In addition, an 20% service gratuity is automatically
added to all beverage purchases, spa services and dinner at La
Reserve. Naturally, guests may adjust gratuities while onboard the
vessel at their sole discretion.

Well…,

No guarantees but several years ago we were on an RCCL cruise. And I just stuck a bottle of wine in my purse at one port….,and nothing happened. So I did it again….and nothing happened

When we got on in St Petersburg we each had a bottle of vodka in our backpack (we actually spent the overnight stay in St Petersburg) We fully planned to turn it over and pick it up on departure. No one asked

Now the people in front of us had their vodka in a paper bag. It got taken away.

My personal theory was the staff didn’t care. But if it was in the open their management would notice they were not doing their job.

Now it might not work for you but ….
