Lipari, Sicily

I just found out that one side of my family came from Lipari, Sicily. This definitely changes the trip I've been planning, as you might imagine.

It looks like sea travel is the only way to get there. Is that right? How smooth are these hydrofoil ferries? I have a mild tendency towards seasickness (fine except for one trip to Block Island, RI) and five hours by sea from Naples (where we'll probably be before heading there) might be awful if it's a bumpy ride.

I'm looking to travel in May, and haven't bought anything yet, so feel free to make suggestions.

Thanks!

You could take the train from Naples to a port city in Southern Italy with a much shorter ferry ride. The hydrofoils are pretty smooth riding in normal sea conditions.

OK, thanks.

I think I'll be OK since it's not on the ocean.

I don't think you'll have a problem unless it is really windy. Lipari is a beautiful island, ask the locals to point out the gorgeous beach made famous in the film "Il Postino", and make sure you see the area (mountain) where they mine pumice. The majority of the world's supply of pumice comes from here. Enjoy!

The famous beach from Il Postino is Pollara and that’s on Salina, not Lipari.

The seas can be rough so avoid smaller charter boats. During storms service could even be suspended. The ferries and hydrofoils are larger and more stable and unless there had been a storm, you should be fine.

You would spend less times on the sea from Milazzo or Messina to Lipari.
