Lipari or Cefalu Sicily?

My wife and I are spending in July a couple days in Lipari and one in Cefalu before flying home. We can squeeze in an extra day. Any recommendations on which one to stay longer in? We like culture, views, history, the water, walkable centres. smaller beaches.

It doesn't sound like you're spending enough time in either of these cities to do them justice, but I will say that the most beautiful place I've ever seen in my life was the view of the sea in a hotel I stayed in Cefalu. It was so beautiful, and I was so exhausted after a three week trip that I never left the hotel. Hotel LeCallette, Cefalu. I hope you're spending more time in Sicily other than these few days. I love Sicily.

I love Sicily, too. In my opinion, Lipari is a little more rustic than Cefalu. Both are laid back, interesting cities.

Lipari is a great place to stay, but an extra day can get you to Stromboli, Vulcano, and Panarea (using public transportation you would need two days for these, but there are day tours to all three). On Lipari you can stay near the beach or in the old city (ten minute bus ride between the two).

Cefalu has nice beaches, a charming old town, and best of all, the Cathedral, If you like hiking, you can climb the rocca behind the Cathedral.

If you decide on Lipari, make sure the ferries are scheduled when you need them.

Small-island travel is quite dependent on ferry schedules, but they should be operating a peak schedule in July. Coming back another time is not necessarily convenient, so it makes sense to see more of the small islands while you're there. Sicily is open for tourists year-round, and with more transportation options.
