I travelled to Italy back in May and found that it was quite useful to sign up for the accommodation notification. So for example, you enter what days you are visiting a particular city on an online form and then you are contacted by various b&b / apartment / hotel owners if they have availability for the date and days requested.
I cannot remember which site I used to do this and would like to recommend this to a friend. Anyone know what I am referring to? Looking particularly for this for Florence and Venice.
