Linate Airport to Varenna

We will be arriving to Milan and then heading up to Varenna for a couple of nights in June and staying at Rick Steve’s “Milan/Lake Como” Video recommended: Albergo Milano Hotel.

We fly into Linate Airport. There seems to be no train line from this airport. Any suggestions and/or recommendations to get from Linate Airport to the nearest (or best) train station that has the rail line to Varenna. And if the best way is a taxi, does anyone know what the cost would be to the station.

Thanks, with any help with this question.

Buses run every 30 minutes from Linate Airport to Milano Centrale train station. There you will get on a train to Varenna-Esino. You can get your train ticket from either a live person or a machine. Since it is a regional train you don't need reservations, but make sure that you validate your ticket before getting on the train.

You can probably contact the hotel to get directions from the station.

There is a convienent bus from Linate Airport to the Milan Central train station. It is well marked. In Rick's Italy book in 2015, it said you could purchase the bus ticket on the bus. When we got on the bus, the driver was not there so we took our seats. Just before leaving he came through to collect the tickets, which we thought we could buy from him. He told us we had to purchase the ticket at the ticket window. He was nice enough to wait for us. Be sure to purchase your tickets before getting on the bus. It was a short 20 minute ride to the train station if I remember correctly.

Just remember to validate you train ticket before you get on the train to Varenna.

Linate is relatively close to the city. I'd probably just take a Taxi from the airport to Milano Centrale.

When you arrive at Centrale, stay at ground level and buy rail tickets as that's where the ticket office is located. There are also Kiosks there, and that will likely be faster than waiting in a queue at the ticket office. Note that the official name of the station is Varenna-Esino. After you have tickets, go up two levels to the tracks. You may need to show your tickets to get through the "gates" to access the tracks.

When you check the electronic departures board, you may not see Varenna on the list, but rather Sondrio or Tirano. Varenna is a mid-point station on that line. You can always confirm your train on the large paper departures chart. The trip is 1H:03M and the train doesn't stop for long so be ready to disembark promptly.

You might want to buy your rail tickets for the outgoing trip to, as the station in Varenna is not staffed. If you'd rather wait, you can buy tickets at the helpful Tivano Tours office in Varenna.

One important point - DON'T forget to validate your tickets prior to boarding the train, or you'll risk hefty fines, which will be collected on the spot!
