I'm travelling w/ 2 teenagers in Italy June 14-23. We have Italy railpasses. How worried do I need to be about getting space on trains? We should stick to IC trains so we don't break the bank on train surcharges. Will I prob. be OK if I try to buy the seat reservations a day in advance?
Teenagers and tight budget: I'm getting a really bad case of the jitters about absolutely everything...
Ok, thanks for the information. I'm glad I don't have to risk reserving well ahead and then try to keep the kids on schedule so we don't lose both reservation & money.
I think that a lot of people will tell you to book the reservation for the next city/town as soon as you arrive to your current destination. I too am planning a trip to Italy and a pass is cheaper for me to buy than point to point tickets. But then there is a reservation fee and that makes the point to point tickets maybe the better option. It seems that you can make reservations online but that will bind to down to a schedule if that is an issue. Good luck and just be on top of your reservations as soon as you get into a train station (which will too obligate you to a specific time schedule
There is no need to worry. The trains in Italy only sell out on the busiest of holidays and there aren't any in June. Even if one train sells out there are so many each day that you just wait a half hour for the next one. You will only need a seat reservation on the fast trains so if you take the slower trains you don't have to pay the seat reservation fee which is 10 euros per seat per trip. You can stop into the station or any travel agency displaying the trenitalia logo to make your seat assignments. You can do this the day of or any time in advance once you get to Italy.
Again, don't worry about the trains selling out and you not getting a seat. In all the years I've been traveling to Italy I've never seen it happen and I go several times a year for 10-14 days at a time.
