Liguria Italy which town?

We will be in Liguria May of 2025 and plan to hike to San Fruttuoso Abbey among other things. Should we stay in Camogli or Santa Margherita Ligure. We love being close to the sea and exploring small towns. Thank you all ahead of time.

Santa Margherite Ligure is a 1:40 hike to the abbey and has a ferry returning to Santa Margherite Ligure in 45 minutes via Portofino. You could see all three in a blockbuster photo-filled day staying in Santa Margherite.

Hi Sharon. Here is a website that I found REALLY useful in planning our 3 night stay in Liguria. It breaks down the region into 3 parts and provides the pros and cons of each location/town. We ended up basing in Chiavari -- which we absolutely loved as it was less touristic and quite beautiful. We were not interested in the beach aspect of the town so I cannot shed any light on that but the town center was so charming and dining choices were plentiful.

What is especially nice about all of these towns (we visited Rapallo, Santa Margherita and Portofino) is that they are all along a train line and can be reached within 15 minutes of each other. So every day we'd select a new town and find a new adventure.
